Chris Wille, Costa Rica

Chris Wille is Chief of Sustainable Agriculture at the Rainforest Alliance. The Rainforest Alliance, an independent, international, nonprofit, citizens’ group, is the secretariat of the Sustainable Agriculture Network or SAN.

The SAN  is a coalition of leading conservation and rural development groups that develops best management practices and measurable standards for environmentally and socially responsible cultivation of commodity crops, provides incentives to farmers to meet those standards, and encourages businesses and consumers to support farmers who are making on-farm improvements toward sustainability.  Farms that comply with the standards are inspected by trained SAN auditors and certified with the Rainforest Alliance Certified ecolabel.

The SAN has brought 33,000 farms in 20 developing countries up to the comprehensive sustainability standards.  There is booming demand for Rainforest Alliance Certified sustainable coffee, tea, chocolate, fruit and fruit drinks.

Wille is based in Costa Rica and led the development of the SAN. He is a wildlife biologist and journalist with more than 35 years experience in conservation.  Previously, he was vice-president for conservation information at the National Audubon Society, a large, century-old environmental group, based in New York, and a public information officer at other NGOs and government agencies.
